I just finished the book A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It was unbelievable. It is about two women who grow up in war-torn Afghanistan and how their lives become intertwined. Remarkable! He has also written a book called the Kite Runner for anyone who's heard of it. I'm looking forward to reading that next.
Anyway, he uses a lot of actual history as he's telling his story. It starts in the 70's and takes you through present day. He puts in bits an pieces of the Afghan nation, who's in power, the Taliban, etc. I would 100% recommend it!
If you are interested in seeing what else I like to read, visit www.shelfari.com. It is an online library so to speak, where you can load the books you've read and those that you'd like to read. You gather friends and can look at their library as well to get ideas. I really like it.

I definitely would like to read it. I also have the Kite Runner on my list of books to read. Thanks for the info.
I just haven't been reading a lot lately, although I love to. (I spend too much "free" time in front of Photoshop.) Sounds like a great book though. I'd like to visit that site. I'm so out of it in keeping current on authors and good literature!
